That Which Does Not Invalidate
         The Fast Of Ramadaan

THAT WHICH DOES NOT INVALIDATE THE FAST

The Fast is invalidated by intentional eating; intentional drinking; self induced vomiting; sexual intercourse; and ejaculation. Also, it is prohibited to fast during menses or postpartum bleeding. However the following acts DO NOT invalidate the fast:

(1) Wudhu (with care taken not to swallow the water)

Laqit ibn Saburah narrated that the Prophet said, ‘And exaggerate in washing the nose except if you are fasting.’ (sunan of abu dawood)

(2) Bathing (with care taken not to swallow the water)

The messenger of Allah used to pour water on his head while he was fasting because of thirst or severe heat (musnad of ahmad)

(3) Unintentional eating and drinking

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet said, ‘If somebody eats or drinks something forgetfully while he is fasting then he should complete his fast, for Allah has made him eat and drink.’ (saheeh of bukhaari; saheeh of muslim)

(4) Bushing Teeth with Miswaak

Narrated Aamir bin Rabee’ah, ‘I saw the Prophet cleaning his teeth with Siwaak while he was fasting so many times that I can not count (saheeh of bukhaari)

(5) Unintentional vomiting

The prophet said, 'Whoever is overcome by vomiting, he does not have to make up that day, and whoever causes himself to vomit, he must make up the day.' (musnad of ahmad; sunan of Ibn majah)

(6) Kissing Spouse (with care taken to control desires)

Aaeysha said, ‘The messenger used to kiss while he was fasting and he embraced while fasting, but he was the most able of you to hold back his desires.' (muwatta of maalik; saheeh of bukhaari; saheeh of muslim)

(7) Wet dreams

Aa’eyshah narrated that the Prophet said,' The pen has been lifted from three: The sleeper until he awakens; the young child until he reaches puberty; and the mentally ill until he comprehends.' (sunan of tirmidhi; sunan of ibn maajah)

(8) Waking up in a state of Janabah after Fast begins

Narrated Aa’eyshah, 'At times the Messenger of Allah used to get up at Fajr in the state of Janaabah from being with his wives. He would then perform Ghusl and fast.' (saheeh of bukhaari; saheeh of muslim)

And say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely: "This is Halaal and this is Haraam," so as to invent lies against Allah. (Quran 16:116)
